Short answer: India supplies sea buckthorn as frozen and fresh berries, pulp, clear juice, ready-to-drink juice, syrup, seed oil, pulp (fruit) oil, dried berries, leaf tea and powder. Almost all of it comes from wild shrubs in Ladakh and the Himalayan states, and India harvests only about 600 tonnes of berries a year, as NIFTEM-Thanjavur's model project report states. So volumes are small, the season is short, and the one thing to check for every form is the spec sheet: juice or pulp content and Brix for juices, oil type and fatty acid profile for oils, and the cold chain for berries and pulp. On 21 October 2026, retail juice on the brands' own shops ranged from ₹1,320 to ₹3,200 a litre.

Sea buckthorn product forms from India
One berry gives several products. In NIFTEM-Thanjavur's model process, a pulper splits berries into pulp (about 74%) and a cake of seeds and skins (about 24%); a cream separator takes an oily cream off the juice, and the dried cake gives seed and hull.
| Form | What it is | Spec terms to ask for | Storage | Typical buyers |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fresh berries | Whole berries off the branch | Ripeness by colour, Brix (up to 12 at maturity, NIFTEM) | Cool to 4–6 °C at once; very perishable (NIFTEM) | Processors near the harvest area |
| Frozen berries (IQF) | Berries frozen one by one | Brix, foreign matter, wild or cultivated | Frozen; IQF is the route for longer storage (NIFTEM) | Juice, jam and bakery makers; importers |
| Pulp | Pulped berries with seeds and skins removed | Brix, acidity, oil content, preservative or frozen | Frozen or with preservative; keep the cold chain | Juice brands, beverage and dairy makers |
| Clear juice | Pulp with the oily cream taken off | Brix, acidity, oil left in juice | — | Beverage brands |
| Concentrate | Juice with water removed | Brix, dilution ratio | — | Beverage brands, food manufacturers |
| RTS drink | Ready-to-drink juice diluted with water and sugar | Juice %, total sugar (FSSAI: min 10% juice) | Pasteurised and bottled (NIFTEM model process) | Retail and food service |
| Syrup | Juice with sugar | Juice % (FSSAI fruit syrup: min 25%), TSS (min 65%) | — | Retail, food service |
| Seed oil | Oil from the seed | Linoleic and linolenic %, extraction method | — | Supplement, cosmetic and food makers |
| Pulp (fruit) oil | Oil from the soft part of the berry | Palmitoleic %, extraction method | — | Supplement and cosmetic makers |
| Dried berries | Sun- or machine-dried whole berries | Moisture, foreign matter | — | Tea, snack and mix makers |
| Leaf tea | Dried leaves | — | — | Tea brands |
| Powder | Dried and milled berry or pulp | — | — | Mix and supplement makers |
"—" means none of our sources gives a figure. Storage and Brix notes are from NIFTEM-Thanjavur's model DPR; the juice and syrup minimums are FSSAI's (below).
Seed oil vs pulp oil
Sea buckthorn gives two different oils, and labels do not always say which. Seed oil comes from the seeds; pulp oil, also sold as fruit or berry oil, from the soft orange flesh and skin. NIFTEM's model DPR says seed oil is generally extracted with supercritical carbon dioxide; pulp oil can be taken from the cream that the separator lifts off the juice.
| Seed oil | Pulp (fruit) oil | |
|---|---|---|
| From | Seeds | Soft part of the berry and skin |
| Palmitoleic acid (omega-7) | 0% | 32.8% |
| Linoleic acid | 39% | 9% |
| Linolenic acid | 30.6% | 3.2% |
| Oleic acid | 17.2% | 17.3% |
| Palmitic acid | 7.4% | 27.4% |
| Used by | Supplement and cosmetic makers (seed oil capsules are sold in India) | Supplement and cosmetic makers (berry oil capsules are sold in India) |
Fatty acid figures are means for Hippophae rhamnoides subsp. rhamnoides from Yang (2002), as tabled in a 2019 review in Lipids in Health and Disease (Solà Marsiñach and Cuenca). They vary with subspecies, place and harvest, so ask for the batch's own fatty acid profile. Supply is small: India harvests only about 600 tonnes of berries a year, and seed oil is generally extracted with supercritical carbon dioxide (NIFTEM model DPR). One Indian supplier's page calls the same oil "berries" oil in its spec table and "seed oil" elsewhere, so confirm in writing which oil you are buying.
Juice: RTS, 100% juice and concentrate, and how to read a label
Three kinds of liquid are sold as sea buckthorn juice in India. FSSAI sets different rules for each, in its Food Products Standards (compendium version 23.09.2022):
On the label, look for the juice or pulp percentage in the ingredient list, added sugar, added water and any preservative. Of the brands in the table below, IMC states 99.9% sea buckthorn juice with 0.1% permitted Class II preservatives; Baidyanath states 99.8% sea buckthorn juice; Nutriorg says no added sugar, water or preservatives. Some brands sell undiluted juice and tell you to dilute it before drinking (Mallika Industries suggests 1:5).

This table answers "sea buckthorn juice price" and "which sea buckthorn juice" without ranking anyone. Every price was read on the brand's own website on 21 October 2026, for a single pack. It is sorted by price per litre, lowest first. Marketplace prices (Amazon, Flipkart, pharmacy apps, IndiaMART) are left out because they change daily and are set by resellers.

Compare the ingredient list, the juice percentage and whether the drink is meant to be diluted before you compare price. We could not find a sea buckthorn juice on Patanjali's own site on that date; Keva's site did not open; Vestige, Herbal Hills, Mint Veda and Bhumija had no product page we could read, so they are not in the table. Where Indian supply comes from
Sea buckthorn grows wild at 2,000 to 4,300 metres in Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh. NIFTEM-Thanjavur's model DPR puts India's area at about 13,000 hectares: Ladakh 9,267 ha (70.9%), Uttarakhand 2,000 ha (15.4%), Himachal Pradesh 1,000 ha (7.6%) and Sikkim 800 ha (6.1%). It says about 600 tonnes of berries are harvested a year, less than 5% of what is available in Ladakh, and that there is no production data. Berries are picked from September to the end of November, often by beating or breaking the thorny branches.
For a buyer: volumes are small, so book before the harvest; most supply is wild-harvested, so ask how it is collected and certified; and primary processing mostly happens in Ladakh, with pulp sent to firms elsewhere (The Tribune, November 2023). On 18 September 2026 Ladakh's Lieutenant Governor raised the minimum procurement price for berries bought from farmers to Rs 300 a kg, from Rs 150 in 2025, and said almost 85% of the annual crop goes unpicked (UT Ladakh press release). Expect berry and pulp prices to reflect that.
NIFTEM's model DPR also quotes rough prices: pulp Rs 110–120 a kg, clean seed Rs 250–300 a kg, hull Rs 20–30 a kg and dried berries Rs 200–300 a kg. The report gives no date for these figures (the PDF is dated December 2025), so treat them as a starting point for talks, not today's market rate.

Defence research lab DIHAR in Leh developed sea buckthorn food products and licensed them, on a non-exclusive basis, to Patanjali Ayurved in 2015, after earlier licences to Pravek Kalp and Ambe Phytoextracts (Ministry of Defence release, 27 August 2015). We could not find a current list of licensees, so none is listed above for that reason alone.

Exporting sea buckthorn products from India
An Indian exporter of processed fruit products first needs an Import Export Code (IEC) from DGFT, then an APEDA Registration-cum-Membership Certificate (RCMC), which APEDA now issues through the DGFT portal. APEDA's circular of 21 July 2023 lists FSSAI or Udyam registration as manufacturing proof for processed fruit products, a fee of ₹5,900 including GST and validity of five years. Your own country's import rules then apply; our guide to paneer and processed dairy exports shows how certificates stack up by market.
For Europe: the EU Novel Food Status Catalogue entry for Hippophae rhamnoides L. (last changed 19 January 2026) lists its berries, leaves and flowers as not novel in food, and its seeds and seed oil as not novel in food supplements. So berry products such as juice and pulp count as traditional food in the EU, while seed oil counts as traditional only in supplements; seed oil for other foods may need a novel food authorisation. The catalogue is a non-binding guide, so confirm with the authority in the country you import into.
