First-time buyers almost always face the same fork in the road: launch under your own label, or carry the exporter's existing brand into your market. Both are legitimate ways to source from India. The right call depends on how fast you need product on shelf, how much packaging risk you're willing to carry, and whether differentiation matters more than speed on order one.
Private Label
- Builds your own brand equity from day one
- Packaging can't be shared across customers, so MOQs run higher
- Requires artwork approval cycles before production starts
- Best when you already have retail placement and a brand to protect
Branded / OEM
- Uses the exporter's existing SKU, label, and packaging run
- Lower upfront design cost — no artwork cycle to manage
- Standard MOQs, since packaging is shared across buyers
- Limited shelf differentiation versus competitors carrying the same brand
| Factor | Private Label | Branded / OEM |
|---|---|---|
| Lead time | Adds 2-4 weeks for artwork and packaging approval | Ships on the exporter's standard production schedule |
| Upfront cost | Higher — design, artwork, packaging tooling | Lower — no design spend required |
| MOQ | Often higher, since packaging isn't shared across customers | Standard, tied to the exporter's existing run sizes |
| Shelf differentiation | Full control over brand, positioning, claims | Limited — same product other buyers may also carry |
| Best for | Buyers with retail placement secured and a brand to build | Buyers testing a new category before committing to a brand |
If this is genuinely your first order in a category you haven't sold before, branded/OEM sourcing is the lower-risk way to validate demand — you skip the artwork cycle and the MOQ premium while you learn the market. Once you've confirmed sell-through and secured shelf space, move to private label to capture the margin and differentiation that your own brand provides.
Neither path is permanent. Many buyers start branded to prove a category, then transition the same exporter relationship to private label for the second or third order once volumes justify the packaging investment. The sourcing brief you submit should state clearly which stage you're at — it changes which exporters and MOQs are a fit.
